can we move on from that one comment, its totally derailed this thread
I agree with Trump; It is wierd to see the channel that's historically been the GOP's mouthpiece play host to someone antithetical to what most Republicans stand for these days, and not try to talk over him constantly or try their hardest to paint him in a negative light. He fucking smashed it and I bet a lot of conservatives had their eyes opened as to what he's truly about.
I feel like they tried, but neither Baier or the other anchor had any clue how to actually challenge him once they realized he wasn't just going to fold from easy questions. I feel like they wanted to undermine him, but were too incapable to do so.
The incompetence on display was staggering. The hosts tried to use the crowd as a weapon against Bernie multiple times and every time it severely backfired on them. Most infamously, when they asked the crowd to raise their hands if they'd support Bernie's plan and he got tons of applause. They just had no idea what to do when the crowd that they -- for some reason -- assumed was on their side didn't actually support them over Bernie. I think we all expected them to be bad-faith actors, but I certainly didn't expect them to be so bad at it. Bernie did incredibly well, but he also was given really easy red meat by the hosts.
they kept badgering him about his wealth which was one of Trump's campaign talking points.
I was mostly with him up until he said he wanted to phase out nuclear. Absolutely awful and utterly misinformed opinion that's just going to hurt the right against climate change.
it also won't endear him with the communities around nuclear plants but honestly any long term renewable national energy plan is better than what we have where you can't even build nuclear plants because there's no national focus on it
You can't really fight climate change with renewables, they're nowhere near developed enough to be effective and for some such as solar power the process of actually making them CONTRIBUTES to climate change. It's a horrendously misinformed stance.
This is my only issue I have with Bernie right now, and I want to vote for him but this is a breaking point issue for me. I tried asking why he has this stance on his subreddit and I got a bunch of anti-nuclear crusaders saying why nuclear is bad but not why Bernie himself has the stance: https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/comments/be8sb9/saw_the_town_hall_i_agree_with_bernie_on/ Trying to phase out nuclear like Germany will cripple our ability to lower emissions. If there's any good thing coming out of the Trump administration it is that the Sec. of Energy is fighting to keep these plants from closing prematurely and that Trump is signing bipartisan pro-nuclear policy. Ironically they aren't doing it for environmental reasons but this is one of the most important climate change issues the country is facing.
ya but the alternative coming out of the right is that we can't have nuclear without massive amounts of coal. I trust democrats much more to be rational about nuclear than I do republicans to suddenly not screwing us over with their "all the above" and "energy dominance" plans ohio's 2 nuclear reactors have been on life support because the legislature can't write a nuclear bill that doesn't heavily favor coal power plants, and the whole thing was caused by first energy fucking selling all their other energy portfolio so they only had coal and nuclear, and bought coal exclusively from Murry Energy but they were major donors to the state GOP so when that plan failed miserably they went begging the legislature for a massive bailout by holding their nukes hostage
Okay but the fact that the GOP are shit doesn't make Bernie's opinion here any better. Like we really need sensible pragmatic voices in the climate change discussion and it's not good when the side that's supposed to be green is pushing policy that's actively going to hurt any attempts to stem climate change. It seems like all the democrat green minded people so far are more interested in pleasing anti nuclear hippies, spreading their misinformation rather than embracing it as a pragmatic solution to the problem.
Going to be honest, this perspective seems completely ridiculous to me. Sanders and Trump differ so much, both in policy and personality, that I can't imagine any reasonable person making "nuclear power" their breaking point issue. 30 seconds of Google searches shows why Bernie is anti-nuclear. Some of it is misinformation, which is a shame, some of it is legitimate criticism of nuclear power. Going to a subreddit and looking for honest takes on their candidate seems misguided at best, and I'd imagine a Trump supporter would know this more than anyone. What pro-nuclear bills did Trump sign into law, and if they are bipartisan do you really think President Sanders would veto them?
1) Consider that I am a Nuclear Engineer and this affects my career personally 2) Before I even became a Nuclear Engineer I saw nuclear power as absolutely necessary in fighting climate change. Fukushima happened when I was in high school and got me interested in the technical aspects of nuclear energy. I still believe after this we need nuclear power to fight climate change and I believe our approach to attacking climate change is the most important topic of the 2020 election, even before healthcare and education 3) Trump signed NEIMA and NEICA. Even though it was bipartisan, both of these initiatives are to promote advanced nuclear reactors, meaning that we would build more. Hearing that Bernie wants to phase out nuclear energy and replace with renewables is concerning. I don't know if he means the current, old reactors that are running or all nuclear reactors in general, and I can't find a clear statement on this. Yang is at least pro-nuclear and has my current support. Recent case: In Pennsylvania two plants that are fighting politically to stay in business (TMI and Beaver Valley) generate 2600MW, while all of PA's wind has a capacity of 1400MW. You'd have to double the wind infrastructure overnight to keep the same amount of clean energy, ignoring intermittency effects. We don't currently have the ability to scale up any technology besides natural gas this fast. We need to keep our current reactors online until we can get the new ones up and running.
I can empathize but this isn't what I'm responding to. You didn't say "I can't vote for Bernie because his policies might effect negatively on my job outlook", you said that you would vote for him if it weren't for this one specific issue, presumably instead voting for Trump. If you had just said that I probably wouldn't have bothered replying. I can get behind the argument that climate change is the number one issue, I've been thinking about that for a couple of years now. I could also get behind the idea that nuclear power is key to attacking climate change. However, within the context of the American political system, I don't agree with your conclusion. Trump seemingly supports nuclear power, but how many reactors are going to be built because of things he does? Is it going to be an amount that offsets the deregulation of other sectors that contribute to emissions, or the knock-on effects of leaving international agreements on emissions? If climate change is your most important issue I am even more perplexed that you would vote for any Republican, let alone Trump, over Bernie, or most other Democrats. The impression I get from Bernie is that whether or not we should use nuclear power isn't a huge part of his domestic agenda and is only something he comments on when asked. I just don't see him rejecting bipartisan bills to promote nuclear reactor development in light of this. I don't mean to be flippant but you are preaching to the choir here. I'm pro-nuclear. I wish Bernie was pro-nuclear. Renewables are important and should be used where applicable but I absolutely support a United States run on nuclear energy. Yeah, Bill Clinton also passed the federal assault weapons ban but that doesn't mean I'm going to vote for Trump over Generic Democrat.
