name them
Sorry we don't see eye to eye. I think people with platforms have some deal of responsibility in how they affect others. It's hard for me to have sympathy for him as a result.
I mean this in the nicest way possible." This post is baffling to me on every level. This guy is giving his honest opinion on a YouTuber and how he feels. You decide to all out attack him from the start and then say you think he's on drugs or socially isolated. Like cool, you disagree with his thoughts, but it doesn't give you a free pass to be this much of a prick to someone. Homestly? If anyone in this thread sounds "full of them self", "measuring people by minute indiscretions", and "long-term socially isolated" its you.
I'm really glad he put this video out. I understand his reasoning for why he didn't do something like this earlier, even if ultimately I think it would've been better if he had. It's important to keep in mind that the whole issue of how to healthily engage with an audience of tens of millions of people isn't intuitive or easy to figure out, and people are going to fuck up sometimes. Things are better when it's made explicitly clear to psychopath cunts that they aren't welcome.
He's not asking for sympathy. He's thanking people for the awesome positive focus in the movement and asking people to stop, because it's become riddled in negativity of late. That's literally all. If you really want to read into it, it becomes a call to tone down negativity and embrace positivity, which also just doesn't at all jive with the view of him you're putting forth. I don't think you can claim to read people from jokes, tweets and frustrated explanations and then be dismissive of them when they go "real talk". That's... socially disingenuous at best, maybe socially retarded.
No. All that people did was the equivalent of Kotaku thinking that Persona 5 song was saying "retarded". This all gets dialed up to eleven because people are fucking stupid, the media LOVES and LIVES off of any drop of drama they see, and Felix is a very high profile youtuber. Then you get actually dangerous people who will hijack shit and latch themselves on to anything that ever so closely resembles their messed up beliefs, even if they are absolutely sarcastic, because these people will use everything to drive their narratives. I don't blame Pewds for this, I blame governments letting these people run loose.
You're right. Extremists will latch on to any vector possible to spread their ideology. That's how they grow. I don't think it's useful to ask who's "fault" it is. Who cares who should be blamed for it? What matters is "who can do something to prevent it from happening". I like to frame it as "content creators can do something to prevent this, so them doing something is good". Others frame it as "They can do something, so them not doing something is bad". It's just a matter of perspective. No one is obligated to feel one way or the other.
Pewdie had ben shapiro host an entire episode of meme review....
Yeah I kinda get the idea that Pewds loves it when sociopathic alt-right skinheads meme the Swedish dude as one of them That is to say I'm 99% sure he hates it. That kind of thing is really damaging to his brand and just so you all know, he does run his own charity. So it's more then just him who's losing when some edgemaster memes "Subscribe to pewdiepie!" prior to committing terrorism.
Yes, he made some mistakes that may have inadvertently contributed to harm and he has taken responsibility and ownership of those mistakes. It's something that a lot of public figures, or even people in general, could learn from I think. When we make errors in judgement that later down the line cause some kind of unintended accidental harm, it's better to eat that humble pie and learn from it instead of doubling down and getting all defensive over something that doesn't warrant that kind of reaction. It's not about assigning blame, it's about doing what's best to resolve the situation and move forward, not making a bad situation worse, and perhaps learning a little bit from it so it's less likely to happen in the future.
This is what's too little of these days. People are too focused on who to crucify in order to feel good again to notice that not only doesn't it make them feel any better, but that there is a better, more constructive approach. If people do something stupid and then go "yeah, that was pretty bad. I'm sorry. Let's try to take something positive and move forward" they're instantly written off as manipulative, wishy washy or in politics, as flip-floppers. the global level of cynicism in the social-media age is destructive to the notion that humanity has any other default state of emotional being that isn't angsty or depressed. It's terrible, tbh. People are either Nazi's or they're paragons... until they're nazi's. How do so many people not perceive the fundamental problems with constant outrage?
All the things you're saying only seem to matter because he's a big name YouTuber. I've made much worse jokes on much more sensitive topics, I'm sure I've followed people like that before without realizing it (like Notch) and some controversial people like H3H3 and JonTron, but I'm not a white supremacist. I'm about as liberal and progressive as you can get, but I'm not a big personality so I don't have a bunch of strangers telling me what my political views are. It just seems like you and others are looking for reasons to label him this way. He's a person like anyone else, he's not some patron saint. People make mistakes, and it looks like he's learning from them. At this point I don't think there's anything he (or anyone else) could do or say that would convince you otherwise.
i feel bad for felix, because even though i really understand (as much as i can from an outsider position) how stressful it is being at the center of media attention and such like he is, how he's like always over-scrutinised and stuff, but i just feel like this is going to make more people do it in bad ways because he doesn't want it. barbara streisand effect, sorta. though it's likely that even when done positively it's just getting old now. either way it sucks that he gets so much crap for the actions of others. i don't think he's responsible or even related to a majority of things that are brought against him.
How would someone even go about demonstrating that they're not a white supremacist to your standard? I don't really know what he's supposed to do. Yeah, he's done some stupid edgelord meme shit in the past, but it's innocent until proven guilty, not "you're a white supremacist until you prove you aren't."
A) Regarding "indians are street shitters" and "death to all jews" incident: Both of these were jokes. If you are incapable of understanding the difference between a joke and an expression of a held belief, then that is your problem. B) Regarding who he follows on twitter: Pewdiepie's official twitter is following exactly three people: Elon Musk, BTS (the Kpop band), and Dr. Phil. You are incorrect. C) None of his videos express a hateful message, encourage hateful behavior, or encourage anything regarding racism. Any political topic or statement that he makes is a joke. Whether or not you think it is funny, it is a joke. JOKES ARE NOT EXPRESSIONS OF OPINION OR BELIEF AND SHOULD NOT BE REGARDED AS SUCH.
Quoting his "Congratulations" song when directly after saying those "racist" stereotypes, he literally say "Blatant racist lie? Yes, but still not defamation" as a proof? Hmm... Blaming him for an indirect connection due to a badly setup algorithm when you should be blaming youtube? Hmmmm... Making Ben shart host the ending part of a episode of meme review? I mean fair enough, but I'm pretty sure he did it bacause it became too much of a meme. Like when people called for Elon Musk to host meme review. He probably wanted to shut everyone up so he caved in. Hell he got that Indian Kid to host meme review too, surely he must be racist because?... And the fivver incident has been talked to hell and back, but basically : if you watched the two videos, you would understand the intent behind it. Basically : don't blame him for stuff he has no real control on, watch increminating video to understand context, he got punished hard for those incident, and if there was collateral damage along the way, he helped the people affected Focus on the people who actively defend racism as a legit thing, focus on those who deserve every bit of hate, not one someone who you maybe think he is but "let's not take any chance" Only [group] deals in absolute Yes l quoted the prequels, but it's still true to an extent
So then why didn't he distance himself from that and denounce the alt-right right away? This has been going on for like two years at this point. He just let it happen and used the momentum to his advantage. Why was he following so many alt-right figures on Twitter? The reason he's only following three people on twitter now is because he unfollowed them all once he was called out on it, you can find proof all over the internet I don't think pewdiepie is a nazi but I do think he's dumb and irresponsible. Jokes may not necessarily be an expression of opinion, but they reinforce and normalize hateful ideas and movements. Especially when you have such a huge audience.
Do you think jokes and expressions of held beliefs are mutually exclusive? Part of the reason the alt-right has been so successful is because they've been able to trojan-horse and package their ideology in memetics and humor. Not offering anything conclusive, but the assertion is that he followed these people. And iirc that's correct, he's just unfollowed them since then. See A. There is nothing inherent about 'jokes' that precludes them from being genuine, political, or being criticized. Considering the mounting body of evidence that PDP at least somewhat holds some of these beliefs I dont begrudge people for thinking he might be associated with them in some way.
I think he just did
He unfollowed all of them after screenshots started circulating lol you are incorrect
