really the only thing that bothers me about jim sterling is that he's looking more and more like that guy who stands out in front of a ren faire alchemy shop yelling YE VERILY WHAT STRANGE ATTIRE GOOD SIR
I tend to just forget about it.
We all have our fetishes, so lets just hear the man out.
Then he starts talking and... things don't get much better.
He's the excentric YongYea I guess.
Hot burn, I don't know how I can possibly respond to such an incredible lampshade attack - oh wait, I already did!
Someone might post that shitty comic by Bors where you have someone saying "We should improve society somewhat" and then some annoying dip comes out of a barrel responding "AND YET YOU LIVE IN THE SOCIETY! INTERESTING!". Well no, in here you'd have Scott working in the backdrop to improve society. He reaches a hand to Jim for him to come along, and Jim just crosses his arms. "No! I'm a messenger about the evils of capitalism! You can't expect me to actually try and fix it! That's for other people!"
Sadly I'm not a law student (obviously - have you seen my posts) but you better believe that I'll contribute twenty bucks or so if Scott's movement reaches the point where it needs money. Which is 20 more dollars then Jim is willing to contribute, although I doubt Jim's finances are able to take that kind of hit wait, no...
Hot take: Bors is a left-wing Ben Garrison with even shittier art.
An entirely new network API that goes through steam rather than routers for connections, meaning no more different NAT types or forwarding port nonsense when trying to play coop with friends:

I feel like Ross Scott would show up and probably say this view of him being like this is bullshit.
In fucking fact, in his Deus Ex video, he talks a bunch of how developers are getting fucked more and more in the gaming industry. Saying that they're being forced to do Contract work instead of actually being employees and lacking benefits provided for employees.
yeah I think trying to draw this line in the sand between Jim and Ross is stupid when they're on the same side.
Then again, this is God of the Grove we're dealing with.
Yes completely ignore the much more glaring problems of this entire ordeal instead of thinking its just a simple "Oh you have to use another launcher" crap.
how incredibly assumpitve of you to think Jim wouldn't put 20$ towards that.
It's almost like...
it's an intellectually dishonest argument
This kind of thinking is so goddamn wrong.
Fuck Phoenix Point honestly, they decided to bypass the market in order to guarantee success. Good for their employees yes, but are you one of them? If the answer is no, then why are you for this?
If this practice becomes normalized by Epic, why would studios even care if they create a good product?
because if they don't get any sales, they won't get further exclusivity deals?
You realize companies aren't charities? And their goal is to generate money to secure the livelihoods of the people working at them?
1: People are allowed to change their minds
2: Pretty sure he never said or implied that EGS was great anyway - to my knowledge in the past he only everexplained that he understood why some devs were happy to jump ship from Steam - and that Steam could do with some serious competition.
3: Highlighting the scummy shit publishers pull, can only ever be a good thing. Shit isn't going to change if people don't smell it. It helps establish these issues and draw attention to them. The more participants in this conversation the better, whether or not you take issue with any given one, and whether or not anyone involved has been consistent. The first step is it being in the public consciousness.
I want Epic to kick Steam in the fucking balls and genuinely make things hell for Valve
I don't want Epic to be anti-competition about it and effectively be just as bad or worse than Valve
is that so hard to ask
i probably hate jim sterling just as much as the next guy but i dont let it completely blind me to when he's actually making good points, we're all on the same side here, my dude
Recommending Ross' video to 250k viewers might help his movement a bit.

Are you here to have an actual discussion or here to shit out your opinion and bad rebuttal and do nothing about it like Jim?
Make some actual decent criticism like revengeanomics' post if you want to make hot takes on the guy, just saying
1: You dont do that because its retarded for long term business prospects. Dont alienate your consumerbase, dum dum.
2: Its been thoroughly explained in literally every single thread about Epic why its store is shit. The major points are the extremely scummy business practice of bribing developers to use their platfor, instead of actually offering a service that people would want to use out of its merits and features, their platform being complete garbage that doesnt even attempt to try and rival Steams functionality, them practically spitting on consumers and telling them they dont matter because they'll just sniff their asshole anyway, and the god awful exclusivity bullshit.
So Phoenix Point's developers crowdfund on the basis of GoG and Steam, sign a year-long exclusivity deal with Epic, effectively delaying it a year if you don't want to use the Epic store and people get upset about this.
And in this weird train of thought you're on, that's a bad thing?
I have Janus Vesta's post bookmarked under the name "Waa EGS Exclusives waa have to use another launcher waa" and I highly recommend everyone else bookmark it, too, so they can just quickly throw it out as it comes up. Which is all the time.
Here is his post, a far from comprehensive list of reasons as to reasons Epic's moves here are bad for pretty much everyone.
Well for starters you got this shit
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/134167/779a6d16-8bc2-4eb0-a02f-5532aa9303ec/image.png
none of the gameplay relevant features there apply to phoenix point at all though, except maybe in home streaming? but steam in home streaming is complete garbage compared to alternatives like parsec anyway
You alienate your consumer base by going "oh hey you know how you wanted this on Steam or GOG or anywhere else and we had those pages up and also this was crowdfunded? Actually fuck you we got a big ol paycheck".
Also, it will not result in a better product. This shit never results in a better product. Name one time shit like this has ever actually tangibly improved something. I'll wait.
I'm sorry to say this, but how the hell is there so many of you people?
We almost literal cry about it in every single thread, of which the number is almost at 10, and theres still people wondering why don't people like the EGS and the shit Epic is pulling.
But hey, I got time. I'll start by the bottom.
I'd rather have the game on Steam, because the outcome would be the exact same Werther it ended on the EGS or Steam.
Why? Because in this particular case, Phoenix Point had more than enough money at the ready, from the Kickstarter that the fans fueled. Such Kickstarter that said the game would be on Steam. Now, you got more than enough proof that you have fans for your product. You got more than enough money from them to make the game, and will probably get much more money from sales later. On top of that, its in a platform that will easily sell you the game.
Then, despite having more than enough to do the game, you get a different option, in which it gives you 2 million dollars upfront, and smaller fees from using it, so to speak, but in return, its quite literaly a featureless service.
The game will be the exact same thing. That I guarantee. You could funnel a truckload of cash into a game, corners will be cut, bugs will be had. And the best part about this, is that you also get a shitty service delivering you the game.
I get mad at shitty services, not at shitty games. I don't buy shitty games, and its not "3 extra months of dev time" that will do it. Bribing people with money doesn't equates to better quality in games.
That's just being naive, and proof of that is Metro Exodus. That I know of, both launchers have the exact same version, so the extra bribe money did nothing but fill the pockets of whoever is in charge lol.
Heres another example… Borderlands has been on Steam ever since it came out. 1, 2, presequel and Tales which is more of a spinoff but still very much mentionable.
Randy however, seems to have this weird belief that there shouldn't be user reviews on the platform of digital distribution because review bombing hurts sales, despite games like MHW, which have had mixed reviews from the very start, becoming record breakers within their own dev worlds, in this case Capcom.
What Epic is doing is undercutting as much as possible, to strike deals fast and amass the most it can. After having enough deals under the belt, it will raise the revenue cut.
You're Epic. Would you rather get payed 12% for each game sale you make and hand out the 88% to the developer, or get something like Steam's 30%, all while having to maintain enough infrastructure to maintain everything under your hand?
You yourself said it. It's a business, not a philanthropy institute.
Yeah they're selling perfectly well because Epic is literally buying copies to hit a guaranteed pre-determined sales figure.
Oof, right in the heart.
I'm kinda surprised that Jim aparently isn't allowed to like parts of one thing while disliking other parts without it being considered "flipflopping". That's just sad.
when sony gave hideo kojima a buttload of money to make games for their console, that resulted in a bunch of really high quality games
like idk what to say, platform exclusivity has been a thing for decades and plenty of amazing games have been platform exclusives
Not after the game was already fucking made they didnt.
