The way Pikachu's face skin folds and crinkles realistically is pretty creepy looking to me.
They were smart to let Reynolds do what he wants, because he's doing a great job of marketing this online. Everything he's posted has been pretty witty and savvy with what people like to see on the internet.
For me it was one of the details that really enhanced the cuteness, kind of enhanced the overall expression for me, like when a real animal has a noticeable facial expression
I guess they saw what he did with Deadpool and went with that approach
