I don't think Jim is any less pro-consumer than TB was in all honesty, I don't think that's where they differ, I think it's in terms of their personas, where as TB's persona was very much down to earth and professional, Jim's persona is much more comedic and outrageous. They both shared the same pro-consumer values and that's why they were good friends.
He supported it before things got as bad as they did. If you watch his latest videos you'll know damn well he 180'd on it hard. That being said, Jim will never compare to TB. They are just too different in how they present themselves.
When it got to the reactions to his death I teared up all over again. I think Warframe suddenly finding out on stream was the worst, considering the initial push he gave that game, it might not even still be around without him, they were really broken up about it, and so was I.
This entire thread seems to be for people circle jerking(not trying to be asshole) over a dude's death. Sure totalbiscuit was a guy we all knew, but it was still just some dude. It's not our dad, bother or even anything close to your in laws. You want to channel your sadness, don't post about it on some forum. Donate to your country's cancer research centre. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/228812/e0f51a3f-abc2-4f2b-85ff-aadc12088846/Screenshot_20190524-232404_Chrome.jpg
try harder
That's....literally the point of this thread. Did you not read the title or watch the video? It's about a documentary of TB and his career, of course people are going to be talking about him, especially on the anniversary of his death. This is the same type of shit that was being posted after he died. Don't pretend like you're not trying to be an asshole here, you are. If you didn't like the guy, why bother posting in a thread about him? If you did, you wouldn't have made a post like this in the first place. Also, good on you for donating to cancer research. I'm sure if you did you have no problem posting proof, no? Unless you're just trying to use that as a cover for shitting up the thread with an asinine comment like this.
Oh fuck off, "look at us being sad" Try harder yourself
Correct, Jim was somewhat optimistic about the EGS at first because a massive contender in the industry setting up a store that wasn't quite as exclusive as, say, Origin was at launch (I think this honestly hampered it so much, EA opened it up a lot in the last few years) could perhaps get Valve to make some progress in improving Steam a bit more. At the very least perhaps get them to speed up their improvements, as they're notoriously slow. But the second that EGS started with the predatory exclusivity contracts, the straight up failure to act as a store with bare minimal features being missing, and so forth. His optimism vanished entirely. Jim has always been critical of Steam since things like Greenlight started, he's never outright wanted the platform to die, he just wants it to get better as we as consumers can always hope for better services. Valve having a very hands off approach to the indie scene does have its problems after all. Jim could very well be a reasonable follow-up for TB, his more aggressive stance on pro-consumer shit doesn't quite mesh up as well with TBs more optimistic stance. But they had similar goals and desires in the end. Jim can be positive, he doesn't enjoy being negative all the time going by his Twitter responses. But his positive videos quite literally do not resonate with viewers. He gets on average maybe half the views on a positive video compared to a critical video. The algorithm itself conspires against any chance of real change he has. Though I don't think there's many others out there as principled and as well connected as TB was who genuinely push for pro-consumer goals. There's well connected channels that do have a fairly pro-consumer mindset (SkillUp comes up mind), but at the same time they have their own flaws and don't quite turn heads the same way TBs presentation did. Even if I wasn't a massive viewer of a lot of his content for a while, I still appreciate what he was doing and how he stayed true to his goal.
Nope honestly just trying to sway dialogue. Perhaps doing this might lead to something concrete
That image does say "your donation was successful". And doesn't appear in any reverse image searches. So uh, that's probably proof. Not that the post wasn't a pointless passive aggressive shit show.
I went through this a few months back, just watching his old videos and grieving. On the topic of similar voices, I find YongYea pretty genuine—he only covers news reports about consumer/developer rights, but he’s a good speaker.
Dude, chill out, it's kinda nice of you to post a link to charity for sure but you could have presented yourself in the light of someone trying to do something positive rather than be an asshole.

Impressive. Most people will be an asshole for free, but you're so dedicated you paid to do it.
How did you manage to turn a thread like this into an argument so quickly? Why can't the anniversary of somebody's death make it to at least page 3 without two bans?
Don't know why she didn't include it, but she plays the same song (live, presumably) she plays in the twitter video at the beginning of the thread before and after the stream of her watching this video.

the "hitlers dead" post what an absolute twat, get slapped
GAF/ERA has been a pretentious circlejerk for years. To this day I still stand by my account suicide there (in response to the staff's refusal to acknowledge Iwata's death - on a gaming site - in favor of gay pride month and their banning of anyone who disagreed), and still laugh at how I got EviLore to defensively respond to my condemnations even though it was counterproductive to his usual smug "delete, hide, and ban" power-trip (which I expected anyway). https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/d91d1c78-f15c-4e27-b400-79c487e0c3da/image.png That's nice, Tyler-boy, but I'm not the one who turned out to be a pedophilic creep who hid behind a veil of faux progressivism and besmirched Iwata's memory~
I will never understand the depths people will go to to be complete scum about TB. People just make shit up about him now I swear. I saw people arguing that he was pro-corporate because he wanted to destroy games journalists by siccing his fans on them during gamergate. This is a thing people actually believe happened. Shit I saw some cunt (thankfully just some nobody on the internet with no real influence) claim he fucked children. No basis in anything, just call the "bad internet man" a pedophile... It's disgusting. It says a lot when you saw how brazen these people got when the new first broke of TBs death. Just goes to show they're too damn scared to slag off someone who can actually defend themselves and dispute their bullshit lies. All so they can act like they have some sort of moral high ground while acting thoroughly dispicable.
These are the same people who, on the day it was announced TB died, felt the need to tweet shit like "Feeling unusually good today." Fuck those people, they're scum.
I can't believe it's been only a year. It feels like he's been gone for an eternity.
Can't believe John died a year ago. Feels like it happened years ago, ugh.
ResetEra is a great place to learn how to be a decent human being, you just read what they say to realise how a probably decent ideology can turn you into a colossal cunt when you don't know how to stop.
Have you ever tried this cool new thing called "empathy?"
There will never be anyone who can replace TB, or be anything like TB. He really was one of a kind. Others have taken inspiration from TB though, which is only a good thing. We need more and more video game related content creators to be pro consumer, and we need more and more consumers to be more aware of their purchases and what exactly they're buying into. Maybe in the future, we'll have someone who carries on the same message TB did with as much clout as he had, but they definitely won't be "the next TB" as again, there is no one on this earth who could replace or be him.
Honestly, I'm surprised that it's already been a year. Feels like it happened a couple months ago.
