I mean, since we're talking about Fortnite, I'm sure the reason it doesn't need NSO is that Epic is subsidizing it. Fortnite's made them so much money they're determined to buy friends every way they can, and if that means writing a check to Nintendo with as long a number as Nintendo wants in exchange for Fortnite kiddies having zero barrier to enter Fortnite (and its store) from their Switch, they can be assumed to have already done it.
But that is an Epic problem more than a Nintendo problem.
I wouldn't call Switch Online a "scam", because a scam is a misleading or deceptive scheme to not deliver what is being advertised. And this matters because Nintendo is delivering their service as advertised, give or take. The word scam is very loaded and anyone inclined to defend Nintendo will key up a whole bunch of resistance at the appearance of that word because it frankly does not apply.
What Nintendo is offering is garbage, but it's not a scam because you're receiving what Nintendo promised. The Switch Online service is a bad product and it actually diminishes the good products it's attached to, but a contemptible business decision isn't a scam.
afaik warframe doesnt need NSO either.
Scam or not, like I said: it's hell of a step back from Nintendo Network.
we did.
it was the bare minimum.
and now you pay $20 for it.
Shit with miiverse you could send people private messages and there was a whole video chat system, even the Wii made it so you could send messages to other consoles although it was archaic. My friends just use xbox voice chat when playing nintendo games online because we can't be arsed to do the audio shenanigans needed with the nintendo app.
I like that nintendo is embracing the old miiverse functionality within the games themselves like in splatoon 2 (the plaza and level integration of drawings was a core part of splat1) and mario maker 2 but christ on a bike miiverse having separate forums for every games was awesome and while I'm sure it'd be a bitch to moderate, we are paying 20 dollars a year for it now.
I think I said this a while ago in the nintendo general but bring back miiverse and make miitomo 2 for the nintendo switch, I fuckin loved that app.
I'm still really unsure what caused Nintendo to abandon everything in their previous network systems to go for something so obtuse and basic, or even why they adamantly refuse to meet modern standards outside of NOJ's stubbornness.
Honestly I think the real stinger is (IIRC) that XBL (and probably PS4 pro?) are 10$ cheaper/mo. Or I'm totally wrong as I haven't had XBL since RDR2 online launched
I know they said that it woulden't always be free but it still feels like a bit of a bait and switch to have it be free for a while... and then you know, not. Kinda groaned this console generation when the PS4 moved to pay-to-use servers instead of free servers.
its been said multiple times but the issue with NSO is that its less of a service and more of a gateway.
the cloud saving its pointless when you can dump all your save data in your SD card and transfer it easily.
the "discounts" given to you are bare minimun.
and drip feeing nes games just because.
nintendo promised SNES games at first
If you think Nintendo Network was just as barebones as what we have now, then you weren't paying attention and are going entirely on hearsay from everyone else who wasn't paying attention. Half of y'all thought the Wii U still used friend codes.
NSO is a step back from NN in pretty much every way besides save data backup (which only works for select games anyway). It's pathetic that this is supposed to be the 3.0 to NN's 2.0.
NN's only reedemeable feature over NSO was the amusement that came with the miiverse posts of kids asking how to beat super metroid.

It is worth mentioning that its not, in any way, meant to be NN 3.0 - not by a mile. Given all the crap that miiiverse had and how it was abused to death, one can understand why would nintendo strip it clean from the switch.
Nintendo Switch Online is 3.0 of their online in general, not of Nintendo Network itself. NN (Wii U/3DS) was 2.0 and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (Wii/DS) was 1.0.
And time and time again, the main argument against Miiverse I've see is that "oh boo hoo, kids can use it and they're bad at vidya". So friggin' what? Kids can be dumb; they're allowed, they're kids. It's as disingenuous a complaint as older gamers who want "sqeakers" to be nowhere near a video game even though they spent their own childhood glued to an NES. Hell, even some of the worse posts I'd seen on Miiverse - and only ever via screencaps and compilations - are about par for the course for what I've seen first-hand in any other online gaming service out there. Need I remind anyone what an utter hellstorm of bad taste that the Xbox 360 iteration of Xbox Live was, and that was practically the Wild West compared to how quickly bad actors got taken care of on Miiverse (and even then, the same people who would disparage Miiverse as a "cesspit" would defend such behavior on those other platforms as "competitive bantz, get thicker skin fgt").
Nintendo and Sony don't lock F2P games behind their respective online subscriptions, unlike Microsoft.
It’s kinda incredible how obvious that your money goes to nothing, Splatoon 2’s multiplayer is hilariously unstable, and runs sub 20 tic
i started playing again recently and half the time I kill someone they kill me at the same time.
The only thing I can find about that is Nintendo saying before the Switch launched that Switch Online would eventually not be free but would have a catalog of NES and SNES games. Were they still claiming they'd be putting SNES games on the service after the Switch launched? Because a lot changes in a year, and if Nintendo wasn't promising SNES games once they actually rolled out pricing plans and asked people to buy their service, that's not at all deceptive or false.
And besides, there've been leaks that show the evidence of two additional emulators on Switch, one of which is assumed to be for SNES games. Especially with the Canoe emulator in the SNES Mini. Nintendo is notorious for insisting things are perfect and they'll delay or hold back releases for years if necessary. What the holdup is, who knows, but the ball's in Ninty's court.
I have 52GB of Splatoon 2 replays I saved after the instant replay feature was added and before I walked away when the paywall went up, and I've been wanting to go back and trawl through it to make a supercut of netcode failures, things like being killed by someone in midair after I've killed them and superjumped away.
The app being limited to NES fucking blows my mind because apparently we don’t deserve a portable N64.
like seriously fucking hell, discontinue Virtual Console on the best possible console, great
