The US military has actually been primarily using metric for a long time. American schools also do teach metric, but don't apply it to anything so most people end up forgetting very quickly.

I tried baking a cake of a recipe I found on the internet once, before I knew that cups and tablespoons were an actual standard weight, and my cake was fucking RUINED because when the recipe said "add a tablespoon of this", "add a cup of that", I just figured the recipe was really lenient and I actually grabbed a cup and a tablespoon and just haphazardly filled them and tossed stuff into a bowl.

And the best/worst part about that is, unlike making almost anything else, baking is essentially chemistry and proportions really matter. If you had been making pasta sauce you can compensate for pretty much any small variance , but baking's considerably less tolerant.
